Notes: Complacency has never been a hallmark of Latin American literature. As the 21st century dawned, many young writers-and even some who had fueled the Latin American Boom-grew disenchanted with the status quo. This program profiles the careers and the potential of literary artists at the forefront of the region's emerging narrative trends. Addressing the influence of the Crack Movement and the McOndo Group-as well as an increasing overlap between cinematic and literary concerns-the program studies the work of Cesar Aira, Ricardo Piglia, Sergio Pitol, Juan Villoro, Fernando Vallejo, Roberto Bolano, Jorge Volpi, Alberto Fuguet, Edmundo Paz Soldan, Marosa di Giorgio, and Pedro Lemebel.

Notes: In the words of the U.S. Embassy Communications Officer, being held hostage "was like being raped. Drawing on archival footage-including previously unreleased film from Iran-and candid interviews with the American hostages and their Iranian captors, this riveting program presents a balanced look at the harrowing details of the 14-month standoff that brought radical Islam to world prominence and forever altered America's attitude towards the Middle East. Additional interviews with religious leaders, top-level politicians, military personnel, and others flesh out a story of uncertainty, frustration, and hardship for all involved, which was only resolved with the belated release of the hostages in 1981.

Notes: Originally broadcast in the UK as a documentary television special on September 15 and 22, 2005.
Inspired by the Jesuit saying, "Give me a child until he is 7 years old, and I will give you the man," in 1964 Granada Television commissioned a short documentary wherein producers profiled 14 7-year-old children, and loosely speculated on what sort of lives they might lead. It was meant and received as an indictment of the British class system, which seemed most inflexible in 1964. Almost as an afterthought, director Michael Apted--a researcher on the original documentary--returned to profile these same 14 subjects at seven-year intervals. Over the decades, Britain has changed unutterably, the class system has partly melted, and the films themselves have become something else entirely. The "7 up" series has been called the grandfather of reality television, and as a whole reminds viewers what we all know: that every so-called ordinary life is a zone of great drama and tremendous risk.

Notes: What specific skills enabled a young state senator to become, in the space of four years, President of the United States? This program reveals a set of methods and attitudes at the core of successful communication. Presented by renowned public speaking coach Richard Greene, the video incorporates passages from many of President Obama's finest speeches-and uses these examples to explore tone of voice (varying volume, pace, pitch, and resonance); body language (improving eye contact, openness, and listening); verbal language (avoiding jargon and using sensory-specific words); message content (sharing feelings and heartfelt goals); and fluency in visual, auditory, and kinesthetic communication styles.

Notes: While poverty has traditionally been a problem only for the unemployed, a new demographic of Americans has emerged-the working poor. This program explores the disturbing realities that many people in low-wage jobs face every day-such as having to decide whether to pay the rent, buy groceries, or see a doctor. Viewers will learn how standards of living are often measured, how suburban areas have fostered a particular type of economic hardship, and how welfare-to-work programs have, at times, led to more resistant poverty. The film also draws connections between America's immigration challenges and the swelling numbers of working poor.

Notes: On the day Britain experienced its first-ever suicide bombing, many assumed that those responsible for the carnage must have been deranged foreigners-but they were not. What motivated these four seemingly ordinary young British men? This program conducts a chilling psychological autopsy as it pieces together the mental state of the 7/7 bombers during their final journey. The work of Ariel Merari, of Tel Aviv University, and forensic psychiatrist Marc Sageman is spotlighted as they investigate issues of cultural estrangement, group dynamics and the "bunch of guys" theory, and the spontaneous formation of extremist cells.
