Notes: Inhabiting a shrinking pocket of rainforest in Paraguay's Eastern Canindeyu Region, the Ache are one of South America's last hunter-gatherer societies-and in imminent danger of cultural extinction. This program presents an intimate portrait of the Ache in their natural habitat, focusing on the Gatu tribal group. Sequences filmed during extensive stays with the tribe reveal their customs and technology, including hunting tools and methods, camp preparations, forays into agriculture and commerce, and a spiritual connection with jungle wildlife. Interviews with anthropologists and political advocates help illuminate the tribe's struggle against rapid development and roving campesinos.

Notes: What we do, and what we put into our bodies, has a direct impact on the way we feel. To prove the point, Rick, a health enthusiast, is contrasted with his friend Tina, a nightclubbing, smoking, convenience-food junkie. Over the course of this video, Rick combines kind concern and tough love to help get Tina eating better and exercising. A strong anti-substance abuse message is also included. The bottom line? Even small changes in diet and exercise, combined with a reduction in risky behaviors, can quickly add up to a healthier lifestyle and a longer lifespan. Correlates to all applicable National and State Educational Standards including the NCLB Act.

Notes: In the first lesson, five aqueous solutions are tested for degrees of acidity and alkalinity. The nature of acids and bases is examined. In lesson two, table salt is produced by mixing small pieces of aluminum with solutions of hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. Current flow in acid, neutral, and alkaline solutions is demonstrated. An experiment using ammonia water and dry ice tests varying degrees of acidity. An on-site visit to a neutralization plant in Japan shows how acid levels are reduced by putting quantities of limestone into the Yukawa River. A third lesson demonstrates precautions that should be taken when performing experiments involving heat. Investigations that use chemicals such as chlorine bleach, ether, and metallic sodium, which should not be attempted in a school lab, are also demonstrated.

Notes: Use this video to familiarize students with the properties of acids and bases. Beginning with an overview of how these two kinds of chemicals react to or neutralize each other, the program explores Arrhenius's ideas on ion release and Lowry and Bronsted's theory of proton exchange. Details on the pH scale, indicators, conjugate bases, and Lowry-Bronsted reactions are featured along with numerous examples of acid and base applications-cleaning agents, electric batteries, stomach antacids, and indicators in analytical chemistry experiments. Viewers will find the video's lively demonstrations and their use of everyday objects and materials particularly helpful.

Notes: Although most actors dream of celebrity, many find satisfaction in modest film and television roles, commercials, and regional theater. This program shows students that side of the profession, interviewing several accomplished performers whoalthough they are far from being household nameshave found steady work on the stage and in Hollywood. Kevin Conway (Invincible, Gettysburg), Melissa Leo (21 Grams), Peter Maloney (Summer of Sam), Jacqueline Knapp (Dominick and Eugene), Jim DeMarse (The Sopranos), Kristin Griffith (Interiors), William Wise (In the Bedroom), and others share their practical yet inspiring views on auditioning, insecurity, disillusionment, aging, and the viability of acting as a career option today.

On Wall Street, private equity firms are buying up corporations and turning them around for huge profits-while America's economic disparities widen. Bill Moyers talks with maverick labor leader Andrew Stern, president of the rapidly growing Service Employees International Union, about the looming gap between working families and the wealthiest Americans. Also on the program: Writer, activist, and philosopher Grace Lee Boggs, a veteran participant in many of America's seminal civil rights struggles, discusses her belief that real change in government will come only from the grass roots.
