Less well-known than those who sought refuge in California, typified by the Joad family in John Steinbeck's The Grape of Wrath, the Dust Bowlers stayed and overcame almost a decade of unbelievable calamities and disasters, enduring drought, dust, disease--even death--determined to preserve their way of life.

Notes: 1968: in that single year, MLK and RFK were assassinated, Chicago rioted, Nixon triumphed, and Tet exploded. The top music acts were the Beatles, the Doors, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye. Man circled the Moon. From Civil Rights to Vietnam, from rock & roll to rocket science, 1968 stands out as a concentrated dose of everything we think of as the Sixties.

Now, Jane is prompted to reevaluate her priorities when her boss - with whom she is secretly in love - falls for her younger sister.
